As I was scrubbing up this cute set of vintage picnicware, I was struck by the use of advertising on this supposedly salesman's premium. Advertisers are always trying to reach people where they're at. In our generation, we're seeing ads in bathroom stalls, and corporate sponsors on everything from stadiums to movie placement.
Back in the 50's and 60's when camping and everything that went with it was popular, putting one's business name on picnicware where customers could read it every time they consumed a meal must have been a good idea.
This specific set was gifted to the home of T.A. Revere:
Quite a few businesses must have went together to support this gift. Brown & Bigelow served the nicest people with advertising since 1896 in St. Paul. Their serving piece could only fit on the very top of the whole package, so they must have come up with the great idea.
Charlie's Bait House and Haggerty and Haggerty Insurance must have contributed also.
This set was definitely for the camping family. There is a burger press, a cheese slicer, a pot & can strainer, and a hard-boiled egg slicer; sounds like some good camping food to me!
The accessories also include a salt and pepper and a sugar and creamer, along with a butter dish. I love the aqua and white combo and the mid-century sleek style.
I also picked up some coasters that must have had the same idea of advertising...
They're all headed to the store for August Occasional, 6-9, where we'll be enjoying the last hurrah of summer with our Summer Sale.
