Big brother with a pick up truck to the rescue, two loads later it was all in our garage. I've sold parts of the pile, used pieces on projects and burned a few that were beyond salvageable use.
Last summer the project began, yes, it's been a whole year in the making. Lora and I have to squeeze the projects for our own homes in between Occasional Sales, life and family.
These are the extensions Brian built from a package of tung & groove beadboard I found at a garage sale. It would have been quicker to cut these from a sheet of beadboard and attach them on top of another piece of lumber, but then the thickness was off. He had to build four of these, one on each side of the headboard and footboard.
The project involved lots of measuring and figuring to insure it would fit our king size bed. The footboard is actually parts from another headboard and footboard married together. We laid out the pieces on the garage floor, and used a fence post and a fence finial on each end. It was finally coming together, but we had a long way to go.
Added vintage ceiling tin to the footboard, sealed it with two coats of poly to keep it from chipping off any further.
A few coats of paint using Vintage Storehouse Chalky Paint Powder and a coat of poly to seal all the pieces, it was time for assembly. Metal brackets for the initial quick set because I wanted the depth of the pieces staggered, and wood blocks for the final brace of stability. Brian is so patient with my ideas and projects, he would be happy with a headboard made of cardboard. He just wants a comfy bed to sleep in, but he knows I like the creative look.
During our Friday night assembly process, our son walks in at midnight, looking at our bed almost complete and says it looks good, but says he'll buy his bed at Ethan Allen for his own home.
No more metal bed frame showing, it's side rails!
It's complete and I'm so happy to have a pretty bed. Next is making a king size chenille bedspread from two full size vintage ones.
