The Christmas decorations are packed away and a fresh new calendar is on the desk(yes, I still like my dinosaur paper calendar).
People look at a new year in many different ways. Some make "pie in the sky" resolutions that are usually broken within the first few weeks of the new year. Others make no resolutions at all because of past failed attempts. They are content to consider January 1st as just another day and maintain their current course in life.
I like to view a new year as a chance to take stock of where I've been and where I'm heading. I'm a visual person, so I like to look back at pictures from the previous year. A quick glance over last year's calendar is also a helpful reminder. To me a new year is a chance to make a few improvements in my life. I have certainly had my share of failed attempts over the years. I don't dwell on them, but learn from my past mistakes.
I use to set generic goals/resolutions, some of these may sound familiar to you.
exercise more
pray more
spend more time in God's word
stay more on top of the housework
and the list goes on...
Notice, many of these boil down to Time Management.
My approach to goal setting is make the goals realistic and attainable. For example, I take baby steps when beginning an exercise regimen. I set a goal of exercising twice a week, (I know it's lame, but I have to start somewhere and it's attainable) and then build on my accomplishments.
I make a plan to help reach my goals. Instead of checking email, I add extra time in God's word with a Bible app on my phone. I grab a few extra minutes while waiting for kiddo pick up.
I keep in mind my schedule, and allow for flexibility, some weeks are more jam packed than others. If I get behind or off track, I push myself to move forward and get back on track.
The biggest part of my new year's goals is allowing God to take control. Opening my heart and mind to His plans for the year ahead is key. God may have more in mind for me than I could ever anticipate.
