I have been reading a lot these last few months. Books. Not magazines with pretty pictures; books with no pictures and lots of words. Inspiring words from inspiring authors. Which is unusual for me, because I'm usually more of a doer and not a reader.

Bread & Wine, by Shauna Niequist has been my summer read. Sister, who lent it to me, seems to be the one to get me to read anything other than a decorating magazine. Guess she's promoting my deeper-thinking self, which is definitely working, now that I'm not cranking out furniture pieces, or swimming in junk up to my ears, or returning text messages about everything under the sun.

Thank goodness it's cloudy today. I can start the day slowly with a good book on the deck, while listening to the mourning doves croon. "For the Love" by Jen Hatmaker will make me laugh as I nurse my very-busy-weekend hangover while ignoring the piles of stuff all around my home that need to be dealt with.

One of my most common requests to homeowners when I was staging homes was, "Do you have any books?" No, paperbacks do not count. Old or new, hardback books are a decorating staple, whether they're huge atlas', gardening books, cookbooks, beautiful, vintage books, old photo albums...doesn't matter.

The first day of school seems like the perfect opportunity to share some of my vintage and antique textbooks. Many schoolkids are carrying personal electronic devices to school this year as their textbooks, which makes me even more sentimental about these beautifully created old books. Can't imagine there'll be anything to even look over in 50 years from my kids' education :(

My current read is by Melissa Michaels, author of The Inspired Room blog. Although she has been blogging for years, this is her first book, and I was honored to receive a free book in the mail from Harvest House publishers if I'd tell you all about it. Gladly!

Is this book familiar to you? Maybe so familiar that you can quote every one of the 130 words that are in it by memory because you read it so many times to your kids? Me, too! So when Happy Girl heard Stages Theater in Hopkins was going to do Good night Moon, the Musical, she made sure she tried out for a part. Much to her surprise, she was cast as The Bunny who just doesn't want to go to sleep. This first week of performances has been quite an adventure!

I just finished the book, The Best Yes, by Lysa Terkeurst. Having the patience to read a book (that doesn't just have pictures) is quite the accomplishment for me, let alone finish a book...doesn't happen very often. But this book had so much wisdom and everyday practicality in it, along with being very entertaining...I just kept reading!

Never, ever overlook the "Free" bin at a garage sale. I'm preaching to the choir here, because I, yes I, queen junker extrordinaire, overlooked the end of the driveway in pursuit of the costly goods inside. My keen garage-saler, sister-in-law, scooped up this very stinky pile of cheap entertainment. Oh, we do have fun together at the small-town sales over Labor Day weekend!

My family is definitely more of a "do-er" family, rather than a "reader" family, but summer blesses us with more relaxed schedules, and it's somehow more appealing to read outside! Here's what my family and I have been reading this summer:
